GREEN AI AND EVENTS: THE IMPACT RETHOUGHT

Artificial intelligence is changing our world and our everyday working lives. At VOK DAMS, we have long been using it in almost all areas: internally for process optimization, externally for the implementation of smart event solutions. Whether it's content generation, personalized guest receptions or automated participant recognition: AI has become an integral part of live communication - especially when it comes to creating innovative and individualized experiences for our customers. But as technology advances, so does the responsibility. After all, AI consumes enormous computing power and energy.

This is where “Green AI” comes into play - the use of AI to promote sustainability and resource efficiency. For us as an agency that has been committed to sustainable events for years, it is clear that anyone who shapes the future must also think about it responsibly. That's why this article shows why “green AI” is more than just a buzzword - and how it can offer real added value in the event context.

WHAT DOES “GREEN AI” ACTUALLY MEAN?

“Green AI” has two perspectives: Green-in-AI describes measures that are intended to make AI itself more sustainable. This is because training large language models costs a lot of electricity. Even during use, for example when generating individual images, as much energy is consumed as when fully charging a smartphone. AI therefore contributes significantly to the growing power consumption in global data centers. The second perspective is Green-by-AI. It shows how artificial intelligence itself can contribute to solving ecological challenges. Used correctly, it helps to reduce emissions, conserve resources and make processes more intelligent.

WHAT GREEN AI HAS TO DO WITH EVENTS

In the event sector, AI can be used in this way to organize events in a more sustainable, efficient and data-driven way. For example, AI can help to choose the right location, taking travel routes into account, or compare the carbon footprint of different destinations. When traveling, it helps to determine which means of transport is most suitable. The potential is also evident in resource planning. Needs-based planning not only reduces food waste, but also material consumption and logistical effort. In addition, smart control of lighting, technology and infrastructure enables significantly more efficient use of energy - thus saving electricity and emissions. And finally, after the event, a “Green Event Reporting” helps to create automated sustainability reports with the collected data. At VOK DAMS, we use AI specifically to make events smarter, promote more responsible action and remain fit for the future. In this context, AI serves as an innovation driver and sustainability tool for us.

WHAT COMPANIES CAN DO NOW

Making events more sustainable starts with the right attitude: it's about implementing ecological measures and consciously living responsibility.

Use AI consciously:
AI should be used specifically where it demonstrably simplifies processes, saves resources or improves the quality of events. Not every problem needs an AI solution - but where real efficiency gains are possible, its use is all the more worthwhile.

Tracking emissions:
The ecological footprint of AI is measurable - provided you use tools that make CO₂ consumption transparent. Tools with open emissions tracking help you to understand and reduce the impact of your own digital infrastructure.

Ask providers:
It's not just the tool that counts, but also what's behind it: Where is the AI model hosted? Does the electricity come from fossil fuels or renewable energies? These questions should play a central role when selecting providers.

Using green-by-AI:
AI can make events more sustainable - from intelligent resource planning and energy optimization to smart mobility control. Those who consciously integrate AI into sustainable processes can significantly reduce the ecological footprint of events.

Follow the discourse:
Green AI is a dynamic field. New technologies, standards and initiatives are constantly emerging. If you keep your finger on the pulse, you can identify sensible solutions at an early stage, recognize risks and be part of responsible development.

WHY WE NEED TO TAKE THE ISSUE SERIOUSLY

We are convinced that technology is not an end in itself. It should help us to create better, more sustainable events. For our customers, for their target groups and for the world we live in. “Green AI” is a necessary discourse: for more transparency, for responsible innovation - and for events with impact.

VOK DAMS brings a clear stance to this discourse: For us, sustainability is an integral part of our event strategy. This is reflected, for example, in the SDG Event Compass, which we use to systematically weigh up ecological, social and economic aspects. Because, as with all sustainability issues, it's all about balance. More efficient processes can make economic sense, but at the same time bring new challenges for the environment and society. Our task is to consciously shape these areas of tension - together with our customers, partners and the industry.
