NEW YEAR, NEW PERSPECTIVES: WHY DRONES CONTRIBUTE TO SUSTAINABLE EVENT DESIGN
The ringing of the New Year's bells not only brings a new year within reach, but also the opportunity to think about other sustainable alternatives. Traditionally, fireworks light up the sky on festive occasions, but the sound of firecrackers and the dazzling lights don't just leave happy memories. The impact on the environment, from frightening animals to particulate pollution, is increasingly raising the question of whether it's time to rethink our festive traditions. In this article, we explore an alternative: drone shows. A modern and sustainable answer that not only lights up the sky, but also brings environmental awareness to the foreground - not only for New Year's Eve, but also for events of all kinds.
Even though there was no ban on the sale of firecrackers and rockets on New Year's Eve and no coronavirus restrictions, imports of fireworks were below the pre-coronavirus level. According to the Federal Statistical Office, around 24,400 tonnes of fireworks were imported into Germany in 2023. This was less than in the same period in the pre-coronavirus year 2019 (29,800 tonnes).
This development is very pleasing, as the environmental impact of fireworks is well known - the smoke, ash and harmful particles have a significant impact on air quality. Every year, around 2,050 tonnes of particulate matter (PM10), including around 1,700 tonnes of PM2.5, are released when fireworks are set off, with the majority occurring on New Year's Eve. Traditional fireworks not only cause noise pollution that affects people, but also cause considerable disturbance to animals. This not only affects pets, but also wild animals that have difficulty finding safe shelter.
The use of drones, on the other hand, offers a number of opportunities for improving the environmental balance. The absence of harmful substances contributes to a significant reduction in air pollution and counteracts potential health risks. Drones are generally quiet and minimise noise pollution, which is particularly beneficial for our four-legged companions on New Year's Eve. By reducing the risk of fires, drones also offer an environmentally safe alternative. This is because the risk of fires, especially in dry areas, is a serious danger caused by fireworks.
THE POTENTIAL OF DRONES AT EVENTS
The diverse uses of drones offer exciting possibilities not only on New Year's Eve, but also for a wide variety of events - an impressive spectacle that is not only visually appealing, but also environmentally friendly.
Drones are ideal for a wide range of events, from anniversaries to corporate events or a product launch. Their precise choreography makes it possible to perfectly emphasise the atmosphere of the event and captivate the audience. Adaptable to different shapes and colours of drones, they can be seamlessly integrated into the design and style of the event. This flexibility makes it possible to develop creative and customised shows that emphasise the individual character of each event. In addition, swarms of drones offer a safer alternative as they do not pose a fire hazard. This allows them to be used in urban areas where traditional firework displays are often restricted due to safety concerns.

THE ROLE OF AI IN THE USE OF DRONES
Artificial intelligence (AI) is weaving a fascinating web in the world of sustainability, and an innovative chapter is unfolding, especially when combined with drone technology. Imagine a swarm of intelligent drones hovering over natural areas, precisely controlled by sophisticated AI algorithms.
AI not only enables precise data collection, but also dynamic adaptation to the environment. These smart aircraft can collect environmentally relevant information with AI-assisted precision, from monitoring nature reserves to responding in real time to environmental crises such as forest fires. The precise control of swarms of drones by AI algorithms not only brings wonderful choreography to the skies, but also sustainable deployment. Flight paths are optimised to ensure minimal impact on sensitive ecosystems. The result is an impressive interplay of technology and nature, where innovation is in harmony with ecological responsibility.
All in all, drones not only put on a fascinating light show, but also set an example for sustainable entertainment at events. Their environmentally friendly technology, which is based on LED lights and does not use harmful chemicals, emphasises their compatibility with nature. Despite the energy footprint of drones in terms of production and operation, their sustainability goes beyond environmental protection. Their reusability, in that the same drones can be used in different shows, makes them an innovative and sustainable alternative to one-off consumer goods. As a result, drones not only light up the sky, but also take a step towards environmental protection.
